George Simpson (athlete)
George Simpson ( George Sidney Simpson ; born September 21, 1908 in Columbus , Ohio ; † December 2, 1961 there ) was an American sprinter .
Simpson was the first to run the 100 yards in 9.4 seconds, but that record was not recognized as he used starting blocks. In 1930 he won the 220 yards in both federations, the NCAA and the AAU .
At the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he took the thankless fourth place in the 100-meter run , but won the silver medal in the 200-meter run , between the other two Americans Eddie Tolan (gold) and Ralph Metcalfe (bronze) .
