George Sperling

George Sperling (* 1934 ) is an American psychologist . He is Professor of Cognitive Science and Neurobiology & Behavior at the University of California, Irvine .

In 1955 he made his Bachelor of Science at the University of Michigan . In 1956 he received an MA in psychology from Columbia University . He received his PH.D. from Harvard University. and has been working on cognitive psychology ever since.

In 1985 Sperling was elected to the National Academy of Sciences , 1992 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

research

He was best known for his studies of iconic memory (1960). Together with the echo memory , it forms the sensory memory .

The subjects were presented with a 3x3 letter matrix for a very short time. Overall, about half could always be remembered. However, if the test subjects were asked by a signal to concentrate on a certain line, the task could be solved perfectly.
