George Reginald Ward, 1st Viscount Ward of Witley (* 20th November 1907 in London ; † 15. June 1988 ) was a British politician of the Conservative Party , among others 1945-1960 Member of Parliament ( House of Commons ) was . In 1960 he became a hereditary peer collected and thus a member of the upper house ( House of Lords ) , where he remained until his death.

Life

Ward was the youngest of seven children of William Humble Ward, 2nd Earl of Dudley , who was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland between 1902 and 1905 and Governor General of Australia from 1908 to 1911 , and his wife Rachel Gurney. His siblings included his eldest brother William Ward , who was also a member of the House of Commons and inherited the title of 3rd Earl of Dudley after his father's death in 1932. After attending Eton College , he graduated from Christ Church at the University of Oxford . During the Second World War he served as an officer in the Royal Air Force (RAF) and was most recently promoted to Colonel (Group Captain) .

In the general election of July 5, 1945 , he was first elected to the Conservative Party as a member of the House of Commons and represented the constituency of Worcester until November 11, 1960 . In the third cabinet of Prime Minister Winston Churchill , he took over on February 29, 1952, the post of Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of Air (Under-Secretary of State for Air) . This he took on 6 April 1955, first in the cabinet of Prime Minister Anthony Eden before it as part of a Cabinet reshuffle on 20 December 1955 Parliamentary and Financial Secretary to the Admiralty (Parliamentary and Financial Secretary to the Admiralty) was. He then became Minister for the Air Force (Secretary of State for Air) in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Harold Macmillan on January 16, 1957 and held this office until his replacement by Julian Amery on October 28, 1960, where he was not formally the Minister Cabinet as a member. Ward was married twice, from May 30, 1940 until their divorce in 1951 to Anne Diana France Ayesha Capel. From this marriage the daughter Georgina Anne Ward and his only son Anthony Giles Humble Ward emerged, who died in 1983. In his second marriage he married Barbara Mary Colonsay McNeill on March 15, 1962, although this marriage remained childless. Since he left no male heirs, the title of Viscount Ward of Witley expired with his death.
