George Wiedemann

George Wiedemann (* 1833 in Eisenach ; † May 25, 1890 in Newport , Kentucky ) was a German brewer and co-owner of the Jefferson Street Brewery , which later became known as the Wiedemann Brewing Company .

biography

George Wiedemann emigrated to the USA in 1855 . There he worked as a brewer in Williamsburg, New York and in Louisville . Until the end of the 1850s he also worked for the Jacob Eichenlaubs brewery in Walnut Hills. In 1860, Wiedemann was a foreman at the Kauffman Brewery in Cincinnati .

In 1870 he moved to Newport, Kentucky, and joined the Jefferson Street Brewery John Butchers. Eight years later he bought Butcher's shares and was therefore the sole owner. In 1890, Wiedemann officially registered the brewery as the Wiedemann Brewing Company . Wiedemann died in May of the same year. His sons George Jr. and Charles took over the management of the business. At the time, the company was the largest brewery in the state of Kentucky, producing 100,000 barrels of beer a year . Wiedemann is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Southgate, Kentucky .

The Wiedemann Brewing Company remained in the possession of the Wiedemann family until 1967 when it was acquired by the G. Heileman Brewing Company . Today Wiedemann beer is produced by the Geo microbrewery . Wiedemann Brewing Company in Newport.

George Wiedemann married Agnes Rohmann. The couple had six children, including two sons:
