George Worthington (tennis player)

George Allan Worthington (born October 10, 1928 in Sydney , New South Wales , † December 8, 1964 in Westminster , London ) was an Australian tennis player and coach.

Life and achievement

Worthington's professional tennis career lasted from 1956 to 1960, after having been an amateur since 1945. His greatest successes are winning the Australian Open three times in mixed competitions in 1951, 1952 and 1955, all of which were achieved with his partner Thelma Coyne Long . In 1947 he also reached the final of the Australian Open and in 1949 that of the US Open in men's doubles.

Worthington could win a total of 20 tournaments. After his active career, he coached the English team in the Davis Cup and the Wightman Cup . The Australian died in 1964 at the age of only 36.
