George Wyland

George Wyland ( George Wyland-Herzfelde * 14. October 1925 in Berlin ; † 28. June 2011 in Zurich ) was a German - American , in Switzerland living journalist and former figure skater .

Life

George Wyland grew up as the son of the Malik publisher Wieland Herzfelde in the vicinity of the legendary inventor of the photomontage John Heartfield , who was his uncle, and George Grosz . In 1933 his parents fled first to Austria and then via Prague to New York .

George Wyland's newly adopted name in America is, according to his own statement, a combination of the Americanized first name of George Grosz, his father's best friend and also his own friend, and the first name of his father, which George Wyland uses as the last name.

After the war, the family was able to return to Germany in 1949, George Wyland had meanwhile tried his hand at a professional figure skater. Back in Europe, he turned to journalism and other activities in the field of communication and advertising. For many years he had been living in seclusion in Zurich as one of the last contemporary witnesses to the history of the Malik publishing house. There he died at the age of 85.
