Georgen Parochial Cemetery IV

The Protestant Georgen Parochial Cemetery IV is located on Boxhagener Strasse in the Berlin district of Friedrichshain . The cemetery was laid out in 1867 in what was then the Friedrichsberg colony and has a total area of around 20,000 m². In contrast to the other larger cemeteries in Friedrichshain, which concentrate on a large and contiguous area between Friedenstrasse and Landsberger Allee , it is isolated in the middle of a residential area in the Boxhagener Kiez.

In the entrance area of the cemetery area is the cemetery chapel and former church of promise, built in 1879, which is now used as a theater.

Gravesites

Grave of the resistance fighters around Robert Uhrig

The Protestant cemetery is located in the middle of the Boxhagener Kiez, which, like the entire district, has been known as a working-class quarter since its creation and was characterized above all by smaller factories and tenements. Accordingly, there are very few prominent people in the cemetery. Particularly noteworthy is the well-known Berlin haulage contractor Otto Pohl , who was known as the “Coach King of Berlin” during his lifetime. In addition, the racing stable and cinema owner Paul Japke should be emphasized. Also noteworthy are the graves of the innkeepers Emil Fleske and Gerhard Gericke and the teaching sister Brigitta Wiesner.

The three workers and resistance fighters against the National Socialist regime Fritz Riedel , Kurt Ritter and Willi Heinze , who together belonged to the resistance group around Robert Uhrig and were murdered in 1944 and 1945, share a common grave .

Cemetery chapel

Cemetery chapel

The cemetery chapel of Georgen-Parochial-Friedhof IV was inaugurated in 1879. The architects Gustav Knoblauch and H. Wex provided the design for the building . The chapel is a rectangular building with yellow clinker brickwork and a gable roof . In addition, the structure of the pilaster strips , the arched windows , the portico and the choir apse are clearly in line with the classicist style of Karl Friedrich Schinkel and his successor. In terms of style, the builders followed the customary trend towards medieval, here Romanesque forms.

In the year 1948 to 1950 the building was rebuilt, which has been used by the Evangelical Promise Parish since 1949. Today it also houses the theater band 10245 (named after the zip code for the area).
