Architecture and history

As early as around 1215, a foundation was established to care for crusaders suffering from leprosy . The facility existed in the area of the Michaelstein Monastery . Around 1318 the purpose of the foundation was changed and the facility was relocated closer to the city of Blankenburg as a poor yard, for example in the area of today's Blankenburg (Harz) station.

The current location, however, was not chosen until after 1700. First, the master builder Hermann Korb built a Holy Spirit Chapel here from 1715 to 1717, then by Joachim Eimbrod, both north and south of the chapel, by 1737 , the baroque building wings that still exist today were built. They are designed as two-storey plastered buildings in massive construction. The side wings were completed in 1750, and wooden stables were built on the east side of the courtyard in 1784. In 1838 the chapel was extended to the east towards the courtyard and gothicised ; other details see a design in the style of late classicism . It has three pointed arch windows and is crowned with a roof turret. The interior of the chapel is designed as a rectangular hall. A gatehouse was built on the southeast corner of the courtyard in 1860, and stone farm buildings followed on the north side around 1900. The farm buildings of the Georgenhof are listed on one floor.

The facility was financed through donations from the Duke until 1942.

The Georgenhof was used as a retirement home during the GDR era . In 1965, parts of the pulpit altar wall of the abandoned chapel of Blankenburg Castle were moved to the south side of the chapel used as Luther Church. After the peaceful revolution in the GDR , the use as a retirement home was given up because legal conditions were not met. In 2001, community rooms were set up on the upper floor of the north wing. In 2003 the gatehouse was converted into a youth center. In spring 2004 the Diakonie moved into the southern wing of the facility. In 2004 extensive renovation work was carried out. In October 2006, a church women's center was set up in the old gardener's house. In 2008, the old wash house, which was completed as a residential building in 2010, was renovated. The Katharinensaal, the name of which is reminiscent of the Sankt-Katharinen-Kirche , which was given up by the unification of four Blankenburg parishes, is located on the site.

In the local monument register , the property is listed as a hospital and church under registration number 094 01760 as a monument .
