The Blankenburg (Harz) station is the main station in Blankenburg (Harz) in Saxony-Anhalt Harz district .

Geographical location

The train station is in the north of the city. While this made it easier to get to Halberstadt in the north, the route into the Harz was quite complex.

history

On March 31, 1873, the Blankenburg station was opened by the Halberstadt-Blankenburg Railway Company (HBE). In the first few years the station was only approached from Halberstadt. The main purpose of the railway was to connect the Blankenburg iron and steel works to the railway network.

From the Blankenburg train station on July 3, 1875, the 3.5 kilometer long ore level railway reached a steelworks in the west of the city. This line was the oldest industrial railway in the Harz Mountains. The ore-step railway was shut down as early as 1885. As early as 1880, the HBE built the Blankenburg – Tanne railway line . The route was designed as a cogwheel train with an Abbot rack . For topographical reasons, this route had to leave the Blankenburg train station in a north-westerly direction, so that a terminal station was created. This route was called Harzbahn and from 1950 until today the Rübelandbahn.

In 1907 the line to Thale was opened. Passenger traffic on this route was discontinued in 1973. From 1999 onwards, goods traffic was also no longer served. It has now been shut down.

1960–65 the Rübelandbahn was electrified. Your traction current system differs from the usual system. Since this route is isolated from the rest of the electrified rail network, it was possible to opt for a variant optimized for the route. For a long time, however, this required the use of special locomotives of the E 251 series , later the 171 series, which were serviced in the Blankenburg depot north of the station.

After sections of the Rübelandbahn to Tanne and Königshütte had already been shut down, passenger traffic on the remaining section to Elbingerode was canceled in 2005 .

In addition to the Blankenburg station, which is primarily used for passenger traffic, there is also the freight station and the north station, both of which are responsible for the train composition for the Rübelandbahn.

Investments

The station building is to the west of the track system. The house platform is still used today. There is still an island platform with tracks 2 and 3, it could be reached through an underpass, but this was shut down due to the threat of collapse. The guard signal box W2 is on this platform. In addition, there used to be another island platform. The dispatcher interlocking B3 is located in the Blankenburg Nord section of the station on the Rübelandbahn.

Transport links

train

In terms of passenger traffic, only the Blankenburg – Halberstadt route is served every hour by Abellio Rail Central Germany . In freight traffic, however, the Havelländische Eisenbahn is active on the connection towards Elbingerode to the lime works . The trains use a bypass curve north of the station , so that no change of direction is necessary.
