Georgian School in Eisenach

The Georgenschule is a listed school building in the city center of Eisenach in Thuringia . The building, built in the classicism style on the south side of the Eisenacher Markt , was the city's first purpose-built school. It is named after the city saint of Eisenach, Sankt Georg .

history

The Georgenschule building was built between 1823 and 1825 according to plans by the senior building director of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach , Clemens Wenzeslaus Coudray . On September 3, 1825, it was opened as the first Eisenach public school for more than 800 students. Until then, there were seven German schools in Eisenach with poor learning conditions. The Bürgererschule became a Realschule in 1834 and received the status of a Realgymnasium in 1843.

After the First World War, the building, then known as the “Georgenschule”, was used as a vocational school until the early 1960s. At the beginning of the school year 1962/1963 on September 1, 1962, the 7th Polytechnic High School opened , which in 1984 was named " Rudi-Arnstadt School". In 1981 the building was listed as a historical monument.

With the restructuring of the Eisenach school network after the fall of the Wall at the beginning of the 1991/1992 school year, the house became the domicile of the 3rd state primary school, which was officially named "Georgenschule" on June 3, 1992 and is still in existence today. The part of the market square in front of the Georgenschule was dedicated to Georg-Philipp-Telemann-Platz in 2012 .
