Georgi Evgenievich Shilov ( Russian Георгий Евгеньевич Шилов , in English transcription : Georgiy Evgenievich Shilov; born February 3, 1917 in Ivanovo ; † January 17, 1975 in Moscow ) was a Soviet mathematician .

Georgi Schilow finished his mathematics studies at the Lomonossow University in Moscow (MGU) in 1938 . After participating in World War II , he continued his studies at the MGU and received his doctorate under Israel Gelfand in 1951 and was appointed professor the following year. From 1951 to 1954 Shilov worked at the Taras Shevchenko University in Kiev , but then returned to the MGU.

Schilow worked in functional analysis , especially in the field of commutative Banach algebras , where he founded the holomorphic functional calculus of several variables . Together with Israel Gelfand , he researched the theory of generalized functions (he was involved in several volumes of Gelfand's standard work Generalized Functions ) and the theory of partial differential equations . Shilov wrote some widespread textbooks that are now considered classics and have also been published outside of Russia. He also dealt with the history and methodology of mathematics.

The Schilow Idempotent theorem and the concept of the Schilow margin are associated with his name.
