Georgios Roumbanis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Georgios Roumbanis ( Greek Γεώργιος Ρουμπάνης , also Georgios Roubanis * 15. August 1929 in Tripoli ) is a retired Greek pole vaulter , who at the 1956 Summer Olympics from Melbourne won the bronze with a height of 4.50 m (then Greek record). He ended his sporting career in 1961.

As the first jumper, Roumbanis used a fiberglass stick at a major event. As a student in the United States , he experimented with this new type of rod and used a rod made from this material in his 1956 Melbourne success. However, this was not noticed at the time, not even by experts, and so the revolutionary technology once again disappeared into oblivion. It was not until after the Olympic Games in 1960 that it began its global triumph and finally it came to an improvement on the ancient world record set by Cornelius Warmerdam from 1942.
