Georgios Zoitakis ( Greek Γεώργιος Ζωιτάκης ; born March 3, 1910 in Nafpaktos ; † October 21, 1996 in Athens ) was a Greek general who was regent (viceroy) of Greece from December 13, 1967 to March 21, 1972 .

Zoitakis graduated from Scholi Evelpidon , the Greek officers' academy in Athens , as part of his military career . As part of his officer career, he commanded the first and third army corps of the Greek army . On April 21, 1967, the "colonels" under Georgios Papadopoulos , Stylianos Pattakos and Nikolaos Makarezos carried out a military coup . Zoitakis was appointed deputy defense minister in the dictatorial government of Konstantinos Kollias the day after the coup ; Defense Minister was Grigorios Spandidakis . Zoitakis stayed in this position until December 13, 1967, when the counter-coup by King Constantine II failed and the king went into exile in Italy. Zoitakis served as regent for the king in exile from December 13, 1967 to March 21, 1972 . He was then followed by Georgios Papadopoulos as regent. On June 1, 1973 Papadopoulos proclaimed the republic. After the failure of the junta's unification with the Republic of Cyprus and the invasion of Turkish troops in 1974, the military dictatorship collapsed and democracy returned.

Zoitakis was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1974 for high treason . His life sentence was commuted to life house arrest in 1988 . In 1991 he applied for clemency, but it was rejected. Five years later he died under house arrest on October 21, 1996 at the age of 86.
