Geraldo Dannemann , birth name Gerhard Dannemann , (born April 23, 1851 in Bremen , † April 11, 1921 in Hamburg ) was a German - Brazilian entrepreneur and the founder of the Dannemann cigar factory .

biography

Since childhood he had close contact with tobacco and cigars in the tobacco city of Bremen . In 1872 Gerhard Dannemann emigrated to Brazil and settled not far from the capital of Bahia Salvador da Bahia . When he emigrated , he changed his first name from Gerhard to Geraldo.

In 1873, Dannemann opened a factory in the small town of São Félix, initially with six employees. He was also elected mayor of the city in 1889. He was a "hero of the community" who, in addition to the first town charter, pushed many social and economic developments in the Recôncavo region. He was able to contribute to the economic growth of the entire region through infrastructural measures such as the opening of factory buildings, offices and the construction of the bridge over the Rio Paraguaçu, which connects São Félix with the sister city of Cachoeira. Its influence is still clearly visible today.

After a few years (1910–1921), Dannemann developed into one of the most important industrialists in the Brazilian state of Bahia with around 4,000 employees in seven factories .

After his death, the Companhia de Charutos Dannemann was created in 1922 with the merger of the Dannemann and Stender companies . The company had to file for bankruptcy in 1954 , but the Dannemann brand name remained.

Honors

The Centro Cultural Dannemann in São Félix commemorates the entrepreneur. It is located in the extensive colonial building from the 19th century and consists of a part for socio-cultural activities and a rear area where production is still going on.
