One year and three daag

Tein year un dree Daag (dt .: Ten years and three days , spellings in Low German differ) is a Low German theater and radio play by Ivo Braak from the year 1954. The drama is one of three plays that started immediately after the Second World War written and who deal with current issues.

At the center of the plot, which extends over three days, is the hunt down ten years ago of a Jew in a village community, which ended with his death, and how this guilt is dealt with differently by a number of villagers in this context heavily charged in the German post-war period.

The event seems almost forgotten when suddenly two “people” from the city in the rural area begin to investigate the Jewish person who died.

Much depends on the silence of the young farmer Niss Brandt, who, having just returned from captivity, represents an element of uncertainty for the farmers who are worthy of punishment. So it is decided to betroth him as soon as possible to the daughter of one of the main culprits - Janjakob Lau - so that Brandt, out of loyalty to his future father-in-law, covers him (and thus all other parties involved) in a scheduled renewed negotiation of the events. The all too friendly reception in the family of the large farmer soon seems strange to the have-not Brandt. An uncanny encounter with the father of the then killed Jew Peter Lass, who went mad over the events, finally lets him see through the game and his conscience stirs. Pastor Bünz advises those who are desperately seeking advice from him at night in the negotiation scheduled for the following day to stay true to the truth regardless of losses, but without knowing what consequences this would have for the local peasantry. Brandt then disappears over the mudflats on the way home at night. Even a search the next day is initially unsuccessful and one assumes his death. Only at the last moment does Brandt appear at the hearing, determined to follow the advice of the pastor.

The time is autumn 1948. The first act takes place on a Sunday afternoon “op de Deel” with Janjakob Lau, the second on the following Monday evening in Pastor Bünz's living and study, the Tuesday afternoon forms the third act and takes place in the open air.

radio play

“Eernsthaft Spill in dree Akten” had its first performance on January 11, 1954 as a radio play version on radio in the series “... un us Tied speelt mit!”. Directed by Eberhard Freudenberg . The broadcasting station was Radio Bremen . The playing time was 61'23 minutes.

"I wish I had succeeded in using this piece to remove a little of the guilt that we all - each in his own hour - have put on ourselves".

Performances

The theater premiere followed on May 6, 1955 at the Low German Stage in Glückstadt .

The last performance that received attention was presented in 1988 by the Low German amateur theater group Schleswiger Speeldeel (premiere in the presence of the author).

The stage rights are held by Mahnke-Verlag in Verden .
