Gerard Van Caelenberge (born September 6, 1952 ) is a former Belgian general . From 2012 to 2016 he was Commander of the Belgian Armed Forces .

Life

Gerard Van Caelenberge was born in 1952 in the Belgian port city of Antwerp . After his school education in Brasschaat and Lier , he joined the armed forces of his home country. The general is married and has two daughters.

Military career

After various posts in the Belgian Air Force , he was appointed to the post of Deputy Chief of the General Staff on July 21, 2009 . On March 30, 2012, he took over the duties of the Chief of Staff, initially on a provisional basis. On July 13, he was officially confirmed to this post and promoted to general. Van Caelenberge retired in July 2016 and was replaced by Marc Compernol .
