Gerard de Malynes

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerard de Malynes (* 1586 ; † 1641 ) was an English merchant, commissioner for the Spanish Netherlands, government advisor and official in the coinage.

According to Joseph Schumpeter's judgment, he was one of the few mercantilists who developed a theoretical argument. No 17th century author had surpassed him for a clear and complete understanding of the mechanism of foreign exchange; however, he was more impressed by the shortcomings of this mechanism at the time than by the mechanism itself.

Among other things, he published the pamphlet entitled: A Treatise of the Canker of England's Common Wealth . This is then Edward Misselden with his book The Circle of Commerce: Or, the Ballance of Trade countered. which has resulted in considerable controversy .
