The Gerberviertel is located in the south of Stuttgart's Mitte district and is part of the Rathaus district . The inner city quarter is framed by federal highways 14 (Hauptstätter Straße) and 27a (Paulinenstraße, Rotebühlplatz). The northern boundary is formed by Eberhardstrasse and Torstrasse. In the south, the Gerberviertel borders the south and west of the city. In the north, Stuttgart's main shopping street, Königstrasse, connects directly to the Gerberviertel.
The two main streets through the district are Tübinger Straße and Marienstraße. Both are considered shopping streets.
The Gerber department store is located between Tübinger Strasse and Marienstraße .
The historic tanner quarter has its roots along the Nesenbach. Today it runs underground and has disappeared from the cityscape.

history

The Gerberviertel is a relatively young part of Stuttgart . A police law of 1806 was the catalyst for the development of the neighborhood. All handicrafts associated with “uncleanliness and bad smell” should be located out of the actual city and here on the outskirts. These were mainly the tanners . In 1816 there were 27 tanneries in the Gerberviertel. Tanning has not been done in the neighborhood for a long time. The last handicraft business of this type disappeared in the course of the Second World War . Today you find yourself in a very urban district where all aspects of inner-city life can be found.

  • The Tagblattturm in Stuttgart's Gerberviertel
    The Tagblattturm is one of the first reinforced concrete high-rise buildings in Germany.
  • Remnants of the city wall can be seen in Krummen Strasse and in the inner courtyard at Sophienstrasse 23.
  • The Gerber - city department store with interesting architecture and over 80 shops.
  • Gerber Quarter Festival every September. Organized by Gerberviertel eV
  • Altes Schauspielhaus, built in 1909, is one of the leading spoken theaters in Baden-Württemberg .
  • The Theater Young Ensemble Stuttgart is an important children's and youth theater.
