WPA van Lammeren (1969)

Wilhelmus Petrus Antonius van Lammeren , for short mostly WPA van Lammeren (born May 26, 1908 in Voorburg , † October 20, 1992 in Wageningen ) was a Dutch naval engineer and professor whose main focus was on the hydrodynamics of ships.

Life

Van Lammeren was born in Voorburg in 1908 and joined the Nederlandsch Scheepsbouwkundig Proefstation in Wageningen in 1930 after attending school, studying mechanical engineering and an internship at a shipyard . In 1929 van Lammeren first went to the Hamburg Shipbuilding Research Institute and then to the Shipbuilding Research Institute in Vienna, where he familiarized himself with shipbuilding research. After his return to Wageningen, van Lammeren did his doctorate with a thesis on the scale effect in propulsion components ( analysis of the voortstuwingscomponenten in verband met het schaaleffect bij scheepsmodelproeven ) at the Technical University of Delft .

In the 1930s, van Lammeren carried out towing tests with geometrically similar model series based on the layout of the lines of the steamer Simon Bolivar , which became very well known internationally. In 1938 van Lammeren was appointed head of the research and development department and in the years 1940 to 1945, when there were only few towing attempts due to the war, WPA van Lammeren and Laurens Troost wrote the book Resistance, propulsion and steering of ships: a manual for designing hull forms, propellers and rudders , which has been regarded as a standard work for years. In the years after the Second World War, van Lammeren continued his research into the background of the scale effects in towing tests as part of the Victory and Arabia projects. Since scaled down tug models have too small a Reynolds number, van Lammeren carried out tow tests with models up to 22 meters long and even with the inland tanker Arabia himself.

Another field of work van Lammeren was propeller tests. His systematic propeller design curves of the Wageningen B series were considered the standard in the field for decades. After Laurens Troost left the Netherlands in 1952 to work at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , van Lammeren took over the post of director of the research institute in Wageningen as well as the chair for resistance and propulsion of ships at the TU Delft. In the 1960s and early 1970s, van Lammeren expanded the facilities at the Wageninger Institute considerably in order to be able to examine, for example, the behavior of offshore systems, very fast ships or the behavior in shallow water areas.

During his life, van Lammeren wrote numerous books and specialist articles, for example in the magazines Schip en Werf and International Shipbuilding Progress . He has also been involved in teaching for years with specialist lectures. He established financially important connections to the maritime industry and supported the International Towing Tank Conference significantly. Even after he retired in 1972, he remained closely associated with his subject.

Van Lammeren died on October 20, 1992 in Wageningen.
