The Djibouti gerbil ( Gerbillus pulvinatus , Syn. : Gerbillus bilensis Frick , 1914) is a gerbil art from the genus of Real gerbils ( Gerbillus ).

Features and taxonomy

The Djibouti gerbil is a medium-sized real gerbil with hairy feet. The chromosome number of specimens from the lower Omo valley is 2n = 62 and thus differs from the chromosome number of Gerbillus pyramidum (2n = 38-40), whose synonym Gerbillus pulvinatus was considered. However, the number of chromosomes in Gerbillus pyramidum floweri is 2n = 50–66. The length of the row of teeth of Gerbillus pulvinatus is 4-5 mm, that of the holotype of Gerbillus dunni 4.3 mm. In the absence of further information, Gerbillus pulvinatus is used by Yalden et al. provisionally accepted as a valid species, but Gerbillus dunni and Gerbillus bilensis are still considered synonymous.

distribution and habitat

The Djibouti gerbil is common in Djibouti , southwest Ethiopia , northwest Kenya, and possibly southeast Sudan . Their habitat are dry habitats from gravel plains to open grasslands.

Danger

Due to the large distribution area and the presumably large population, the Djibouti gerbil is not considered endangered. Under the synonym Gerbillus bilensis , the species was classified as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) in 1996 .
