The tree was named after the conservationist Gerd Walter from Ulm. He planted the linden tree on the Hochstrasse in 1950 after returning from the Second World War . Walter bought the young tree with collected 50-pfennig coins that were reissued from 1949 as part of the currency reform in West Germany . These depict a kneeling woman planting an (oak) tree, which is a symbol of the reconstruction of Germany after the Second World War.
