Gerd Rasp (born May 10, 1960 in Bad Reichenhall ) is a German specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine with additional qualifications in plastic surgery and allergology , university professor, director of the clinic for ear, nose and throat diseases and dean for research at Paracelsus Medical Private University of Salzburg . He is known for his work in the field of nasal medicine ( rhinology ) and middle ear surgery .

Life

After studying mathematics and physics at LMU Munich 1980–81, Rasp studied medicine from 1981–1987. In 1985, joined the research laboratory of the ENT clinic at LMU Munich. In 1987 he joined the ENT clinic at LMU Munich as a research assistant. In the same year the license to practice medicine took place. In 1989 he received his doctorate with magna cum laude on the topic of primary structure and inhibitory properties of the active sequence of the ovine inter-alpha- trypsin inhibitor . In 1992 he completed his training to become a specialist in ear, nose and throat medicine . In 1994 he became a senior physician and qualified as a professor in 1995 on local immunodiagnostics in nasal secretions. Rasp then dealt with the establishment of a working group with the supervision of 21 doctorates and so far two habilitations.

The determination of the teaching qualification as Dr. med. habil. and the appointment as a private lecturer took place in 1997. In the same year, the cochlear implantation was taken over at the ENT clinic and, as a result, the active collaboration and the development of the team with a five-fold increase in the number of cases. In 2001 he became senior physician in charge. In 2003 he was appointed associate professor . In 2005 he became medical director of the ENT clinic in the Katharinenhospital in Stuttgart . In 2008 he was appointed to the board of directors of the Clinic for Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases, and in 2013 he was dean for research at the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg.

Rasp undertook stays abroad for further training in 1996 in Amsterdam (rhinoplasty), 1998 in Zurich (skull base surgery), 2000 in Miami (middle ear surgery and cochlear implantation) and in 2004 in New Orleans (skull base surgery).

Scientific contribution

Rasp initially undertook experimental work with the sequencing of the active sequence of the ovine inter-alpha trypsin inhibitor. Later he focused on topics in allergology and rhinology. The focus of the research was on the analysis of the local secretion and tissue, especially with regard to inflammatory mechanisms. This is where the majority of the publications came about. The scientific cooperation with the team at the ENT clinic of the LMU Munich also resulted in joint publications and study participation. The habilitation thesis dealt with the subject of clinical investigation of inflammatory parameters for local immunodiagnostics on the nasal mucosa . As part of his clinical work in Munich, Stuttgart and Salzburg, Rasp took part in a research network on paragagliomas under Hartmut Neumann in Freiburg. A neurootological working group was set up in Salzburg.
