On December 6, 2006, she was unexpectedly elected chairman of the Second Chamber in a secret election, against the Christian Democrat Maria van der Hoeven and the right-wing liberal Henk Kamp . After the 2010 election, she was re-elected to this post on June 22nd. She received 94 votes (with 150 seats in total), the opposing candidate Charlie Aptroot from the right-wing liberals received 54 votes.

In the parliamentary elections on September 12, 2012, Verbeet no longer ran for the Second Chamber of the States General and thus resigned from it on September 19, 2012 together with 50 other MPs. As a result, she has not been the Chair of the Second Chamber since then. Her successor was Anouchka van Miltenburg from VVD .
