Fountain of Justice (2008)

The Justice Fountain is a fountain in Wuppertal - Elberfeld designed by the sculptor Bernhard Hoetger , which was inaugurated in 1910 during the festival week for the 300th anniversary of Elberfeld on what was then the "Parade Ground" (since 1922 " Platz der Republik ").

The fountain was donated by August von der Heydt , who said in his inauguration speech:

The spirit that allowed our city to grow from its humble beginnings, that it stands high among the cities of Germany today, […] is the spirit of justice. "

The well is provided with the biblical words:

" The mouth of the righteous is a living well "

- Proverbs Solomon 10, verse 11

The fountain basin made of shell limestone stands on three lion figures and is crowned by the 7.50 m high sculpture of justice , a woman in the posture of an adorant . The art- cast iron lions and the bronze sculpture were made by the renowned Lauchhammer art and bell foundry based on Hoetger's models.

The sculpture of justice was dismantled and melted down for armament purposes in 1944, the substructure was preserved and was restored from 1957 to 1959. In this incomplete form, the fountain has been a listed building since 1989 .
