List of wells in Wuppertal

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of wells in Wuppertal includes existing and former well systems and water features in Wuppertal .

With a few exceptions, wells that are open to the public or belong to municipal institutions are listed. In contrast to stairs , which are plentiful in the city, the cityscape of Wuppertal is not rich in fountains. This can be seen, among other things, in the low number of wells placed under monument protection. These are the fairy tale fountain , the justice fountain , the jubilee fountain , the fountain with putti in Adolf-Vorwerk-Strasse at the Toelleturm , the fountain on the school grounds Eichenstrasse am Rott , the Jahn memorial fountain in Ronsdorf , the decorative wall fountain on Kölner Strasse as well since April 2016 also the bleacher fountain on the Wupperfeld market.

One of the best known and largest is the anniversary fountain, inaugurated in 1901 on the Elberfeld Neumarkt . With his revealing representations, this triggered violent controversies at the time, which divided the population of the city of Elberfeld into two camps.

The list is arranged chronologically according to the construction and does not claim to be complete.

The multi-curved basin with a diameter of eight meters is located on a step substructure. The sea god , mermaids and sea monsters are depicted here . A three-meter high Neptune and accessories rises on a three-storey structure . The structure is lively with tritons , putti and dolphins . The revealing depiction of Neptune, in the form of the anatomically correct modeled pubic region, indignant the moralists at the time - for them the figures were all too clearly masculine. The architect Kuno Riemann designed the fountain basin from Kirchheim shell limestone with a copper rim. A basilisk spouting water was at the feet of the female figure. The large fountain, which looks like a gigantic baptismal font, is supported by lying lions on cast iron. The lions themselves spit water from their mouths into drainage pipes that are embedded in a stone mosaic. During the Nazi era, Hoetger was considered degenerate and the fountain figure was melted down during World War II. From 1957 to 1959, with the help of the sculptor Fritz Bernuth, the remaining fountain system, from which no more water ran, was restored. In 1989 the fountain was restored again, moved a few meters and connected to the water supply again. On the initiative of Hans-Joachim Camphausen, the fountain sculpture was reconstructed in 2011 with private funds by the sculptor Schwan Kamal . It was rebuilt at his workplace, the Rolf Kayser foundry in Düsseldorf. The fountain substructure was renovated in spring 2012, the sculpture weighing around one ton was erected on June 18, 2012 and unveiled on June 24, 2012.

It took almost another two years before the fountain with the boy figure was completed. Shortly after the figure was erected, it was damaged overnight, so it was removed and repaired for a month.

After the Second World War, the W. Girardet publishing house donated a new Bökelbrunnen, which was inaugurated on June 9, 1961 at the new location on Bahnhofstrasse. The sculptor of the second fountain was also Erich Cleff, but this time the fountain basin is made of granite. • Established: 1989
  • Status: received at another location
  • Description: After the old Döppersberg fountain was demolished in the summer of 1988 , this fountain system was built on the Alte Freiheit. The fountain goes back to an idea by the architects Hans Christoph Goedeking and Jürgen Schmidt and was designed as a step pyramid made of black granite. The top of the pyramid is formed by a 100 centimeter red-brown granite ball. This from the Josef Kusser granite works in Aicha vorm Wald dances through an excess water pressure of 0.68 bar in a well that is also precisely ground. The fact that the water runs down on all sides of the pyramid and does not leave the steps dry prevented the non-residents from settling here permanently. This was also the reason for the demolition of the old well. But this fountain was also removed from this location in 2000 with the construction of the City-Arkaden and changed to Willy-Brandt-Platz .
