history

The northern building of today's complex was built in 1916 in the residential area of Friedrich-Engels-Allee and served as the headquarters of the Wicküler-Küpper Brewery GmbH, founded in 1845 . When production and the remaining head office of the brewery were relocated to Cologne in 1990 , the Clees Group acquired the complex and in the same year initiated the renovation and modernization of the site with an investment of 210 million DM (around 107 million euros ) new retail park Wicküler Park with three buildings. The Walmart retail group moved into the building to the north and set up its German headquarters in the western part of the site of the former prison in Wuppertal ; A Mediamarkt branch was established there as a sub-tenant . In 2007 the Metro Group took over Walmart; A Real store moved into the retail space of the former Walmart, while the RSM Breidenbach tax consultancy is located in the western building .

After an interim sale, the complex has been owned by the group again since 2011. In 2012, the building complex was briefly discussed as a possible location for the planned settlement of the furniture company IKEA , but was not pursued any further due to legal and economic restrictions.

After the extensive renovation and modernization since summer 2014, the shopping center is known under the name Wicküler City , in addition to new main tenants and a visually and technically modified entrance and retail area, a new gastronomy concept in the form of a food court is being implemented. Since January 2017, the urban form department for immigration and integration , parts of the local Job Centers and other specialized integrators to about 3700 square meters floor space, the Competence Center House of integration to fugitives and other immigration groups , the integration easier.

Art and culture

The Wicküler fountain

In 1989 the copper Wicküler fountain was inaugurated. It consists of a Sud - and a mash tun , showing the brewery Insignia tub , Darre and ladle . After the property was taken over by the Clees Group and it was redesigned to become Wicküler Park , it was moved to the forecourt of the electronics store opposite.

Since 2005, Wicküler City has been one of eleven Wuppertal stations on the NRW football route , which, as a bicycle route, connects 15 cities in North Rhine-Westphalia with nationally or internationally known football clubs. The first lines of the text on the information board read:

'Men like us - Wicküler beer!' This famous advertising slogan for the fresh light from the Bergisch is now as much a thing of the past as the Wicküler brewery itself and even the Wuppertaler SV. The only thing left is the name for this shopping center. "

In October 2014, the northern parking garage of Wicküler City was the venue for the Underground project of the Pina Bausch dance theater, with the advice of choreographer Mark Sieczkarek .

In the course of the redesign to Wicküler City , light walls and light steles were and will be installed inside the building, which show Wuppertal images and historical views of the Wicküler brewery.
