The Märchenbrunnen is a fountain in the Elberfeld district of Wuppertal .

description

In the villa district Zooviertel , which is also home to the Wuppertal Zoo , the Märchenbrunnen stands in the middle of the intersection of Jaeger , Wotan , Donar and Baldurstrasse on a traffic island.

The fountain was set up in this place in 1897 and shows motifs from four fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm : Cinderella , Sleeping Beauty , Little Red Riding Hood and Snow White . It was presented to the city of Elberfeld as a gift by the government architect Rudolf Hermanns on behalf of the Hermanns & Riemann company on November 13, 1897. The fountain was designed in sandstone by the architectural office , the group of figures was worked out by the Cologne sculptor Wilhelm Albermann and cast in zinc in the Gladenbeck foundry based on Albermann's models .

Current development

In 2006 the fountain was restored on the initiative of the Sonnborn-Zoo-Varresbeck Citizens' Association. The restoration of the fountain's water basins, which had been missing since 1939, was accomplished by 2011. A larger individual donation in 2010 secured the financing for further restoration work. The last work on the fountain was completed at the end of June, the official inauguration was for the fairy tale festival on September 24th, 2011. Electricity and water for future operation will then be provided free of charge by the municipal utilities , the citizens' association takes on a sponsorship and takes care of the lighting, among other things .
