August Freiherr von der Heydt (born May 18, 1851 in Elberfeld ( Wuppertal ); † September 28, 1929 in Bonn ) was a banker and art patron . Occasionally his name is also given with "August Karl", but this is not historically proven.

Life

His parents were the banker August von der Heydt (1825–1867) and his wife Maria Helene Boeddinghaus (1828–1899), a daughter of the Essen factory owner Karl Boeddinghaus (1797–1872). His grandfather was the Prussian minister August Freiherr von der Heydt .

August worked at Bankhaus Delbrück, Leo & Cie. since 1874 in his father's banking house von der Heydt-Kersten & Sons and became one of his partners in 1878. He was one of the greatest sponsors of his hometown, whose financial and moral support was largely due to the establishment of the city theater, the Burgholz state forest , the building of the zoological garden and the establishment of the municipal art museum . He was a founding member and long-term chairman of the Elberfeld Beautification Association .

As a patron he supported modern art. His private collection was one of the most important of its time; it included works by Honoré Daumier , Georges Braque , Pablo Picasso , Ferdinand Hodler , Paul Cézanne , Henri Matisse , Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Gauguin as well as numerous German expressionists (e.g. Paula Modersohn-Becker , Emil Nolde , Oskar Kokoschka ). A substantial part of the collection was destroyed in the air raid on Wuppertal in June 1944. The parts of the collection that remained after the Second World War were given to the von der Heydt Museum of the city of Wuppertal by his son Eduard (1882–1964) .

In 1880 August married Selma Haarhaus (1862–1944), their sons August and Eduard were born in 1881 and 1882. The youngest son Robert Bernhard (* 1889) died shortly after his birth. In 1920 the couple moved their residence to today's Koblenzer Straße 121 in Bad Godesberg .

Von der Heydt received numerous honors. He was an honorary knight of the Order of St. John , an honorary citizen of the city of Elberfeld and a royal Greek consul. He held the title of Secret Commerce Councilor .
