The square, directly in front of the Barmer Town Hall , is next to the Alter Markt and Geschwister-Scholl-Platz a central square in the pedestrian zone of Barmen. It was renamed on May 11, 2006 by Mayor Peter Jung in the presence of the widow Christina Rau and the adult daughter Anna Rau with a solemn ceremony. Before the renaming, the square was basically nameless and was commonly referred to as the town hall forecourt.

In front of the west wing of the town hall, the bronze relief "The valley of the Wupper" by Bert Gerresheim has been located since 1981 .

Numerous shops have settled around the square and outdoor restaurants offer the opportunity to linger. At city festivals such as Barmen Live and Christmas markets , the square is always the central point of such festivities.
