The Werther Brunnen is a fountain in the Barmen district of Wuppertal near the Werther Bridge and at the east end of the Werth pedestrian zone . As part of the Astropath Wuppertal, it represents the sun .

location

The fountain is located at the east end of the Werth pedestrian zone between the Werther Brücke suspension railway station , Werther Brücke and the Sparkasse real estate center in Werth / Höhne in the Barmen district of Wuppertal.

architecture

The fountain consists of two opposing hemispheres made of stainless steel at a distance of 62 centimeters, which stand on a low support. Together they have a diameter of about three meters. The water is sprayed through 26 nozzles in the inner surface of the two hemispheres on the opposite underside. When the water arrives on the opposite side, it is atomized to form a fine water foam ( spray ). Approx. 75,000 liters of water are sprayed between the two hemispheres per hour. The whole construction stands in a paved hollow. The well is located under an underground tank with a capacity of five cubic meters.

history

sign

On September 30, 1978, the fountain was officially inaugurated by Mayor Gottfried Gurland . The fountain was the winner in a competition between eleven artists and was selected by the art commission of the city of Wuppertal. It was designed and built by the Düsseldorf sculptor Friedrich Werthmann (1927–2018).

When the Astro Path Wuppertal was set up in 1988 , the fountain served as the sun and thus the center for the planets in the solar system (scale 1: 552 million). Since August 7, 2014, the fountain has also been illuminated in the evening by the Real Estate Location Association (ISG) Barmen-Werth . The reopening of the Werther Brücke suspension railway station was celebrated at the Werther Brunnen in August 2013.

In November 2015, ISG Barmen-Werth turned the fountain, which is not in operation in winter, into a Christmas ball. Werthmann let his annoyance be communicated through his works supervisor Hartmut Witte.
