Gerhard Böwering

Gerhard Böwering SJ (born 1939 in Mönchengladbach ) is an American scholar of Islam and a university professor of German origin. He is a Jesuit, a priest since 1970 and Professor of Islamic Studies at Yale University , New Haven (Connecticut) since 1984 . He was previously an Assistant / Associate Professor at the University of Pennsylvania , Philadelphia (1975–1984). One of his areas of interest is Sufism . He is one of the editors of the Princeton Encyclopedia of Islamic Political Thought ( Princeton University Press, 2013). He is the author of numerous articles, including the Encyclopaedia of Islam , the Encyclopedia of the Qur'an, and the Encyclopaedia Iranica .

Life

Böwering's family moved to Würzburg in the 1940s . There he graduated from high school in 1959 and entered the Jesuit order. He was sent to Pakistan as a missionary and ordained a priest there in 1970. This was followed by a degree in Islam at McGill University in Montreal . After receiving his doctorate and working at the University of Pennsylvania, he was offered a position at Yale in 1984. He has traveled to more than 70 countries.
