Gerhard Buchleitner

Gerhard Buchleitner (born November 8, 1942 in Klagenfurt ) is a former Austrian politician ( SPÖ ) and trade union secretary. From 1989 to 2001 he was a deputy governor of the Salzburg provincial government and from 1990 to 2001 he was state party chairman of the SPÖ Salzburg.

education and profession

Buchleitner attended elementary school from 1948 to 1952 and secondary school from 1952 to 1956, before graduating from a commercial school between 1956 and 1958 . He then worked as a commercial clerk in Klagenfurt from 1958 to 1962 and did his military service between 1961 and 1962. Between 1962 and 1966 he was subsequently active as secretary of the Carinthian state executive of the Austrian trade union federation, in 1966 he moved to Salzburg as state secretary of the tourism union. Buchleitner worked in this position until 1980.

Politics and functions

Buchleitner joined the Social Democratic Party in 1961 and acted from 1963 to 1966 as deputy chairman of the Austrian Youth Union of Carinthia. After moving to Salzburg in 1973, he became a member of the Salzburg City Council and from 1977 to 1980 he held the position of deputy chairman of the SPÖ local council. He also worked as a city councilor in Salzburg from 1980 to 1982 and was Vice Mayor of Salzburg from 1982 to 1989. In 1989 he resigned from the Salzburg municipal council and on September 13, 1989, he moved to the Salzburg provincial government as deputy governor, where he worked until April 25, 2004.

In addition to his political mandates, Buchleitner was a member of the plenary assembly of the Salzburg Chamber of Labor from 1969 to 1980 and was active within the party between 1983 and 1989 as district party chairman of the SPÖ Salzburg-Stadt. He was also a member of the state party executive from 1980 to 2001 and was a member of the state party presidium of the SPÖ Salzburg between 1982 and 2001. As the highest position within the party, he held the office of regional party chairman of the SPÖ Salzburg from 1990 to 2001.
