Anthony Abbott

Anthony Chisholm Abbott PC (born November 26, 1930 in Montreal , Québec ) is a Canadian lawyer and politician of the Liberal Party of Canada and the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada , who was a member of the House of Commons and Minister for several years .

Life

Anthony Abbott, son of longtime member of the House of Commons, minister and later judge at the Supreme Court of Canada Douglas Abbott , completed a course of study after attending school, which he completed with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He completed another law degree with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) and then took up a position as a lawyer.

In the general election of July 8, 1974 Abbott was elected as a candidate for the Liberal Party in the constituency of Mississauga as a member of the House of Commons, but lost this mandate in the subsequent general election on May 22, 1979 . On September 15, 1976, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed him to the 20th Canadian Cabinet as Minister for Consumer and Business Affairs and held this ministerial office until September 15, 1977. He was then Minister of State for Small Enterprises, before his last position on November 24 1978 was Minister for National Income until the end of Trudeau's tenure on June 3, 1979.

After leaving the government and the House of Commons, he resumed his legal practice. Between 1980 and 1988, he also served as a business and legal advisor to a London- based Canadian law firm and as President of the Retail Council of Canada . He later left the Liberal Party and ran in the November 21, 1988 election for the Progressive Conservative Party in the Eglinton-Lawrence constituency for a seat of parliament, but suffered one more electoral defeat.
