Gerhard Dahl

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerhard Dahl (* 1937 ) is a German psychologist and psychoanalyst . He studied psychology and received his doctorate in 1968 with Robert Heiss in Freiburg im Breisgau with a mathematical-statistical method criticism of the American adaptation of the Hamburg-Wechsler intelligence test for adults (HAWIE). In his dissertation he developed the short form WIP with only four subtests, which reliably records the overall IQ.

Life

From 1963 to 1970 Dahl worked as a clinical psychologist in the Psychiatric-Neurological Clinic of the Free University of Berlin . In his publications he draws attention to the problems of test psychology and psychodiagnostics: For psychiatric-neurological patients, intelligence examinations with the extensive and time-consuming Wechsler scales have often proven to be very stressful. With the help of a statistically secured procedure for sub-test selection, the test short form WIP was developed, which dispenses with untenable profile interpretations (degradation quotient) and can be carried out in a reasonable presentation time. Test manuals are available for two versions of the WIP , which provide detailed statistical analyzes and standard norms for determining the WIP-IQ. With the dissolution of Anton Hain Verlag and the establishment of Dahl's own psychoanalytical practice, no further editions with more recent studies on the WIP were published. As a training analyst and lecturer at the Karl Abraham Institute in Berlin , he published texts on psychoanalytic conceptualization and theory building . His understanding of Freud's concept of primary narcissism has been controversial. Several essays have appeared on the question of time and retrospect . In applied psychoanalysis in literature and art, he interpreted a. a. the pathological consequences of the primal scene in Hermann Broch's Virgil novel.
