Gerhard Ebeler

Gerhard (Bernhard Josef) Ebeler (born January 28, 1877 in Cologne ; † November 10, 1956 in Bergisch Gladbach ) was a German sculptor , handcrafted speaker and dialect poet in Cologne dialect .

Gerhard Ebeler did not excel as a sculptor, but was at least involved in a stonemasonry in Cologne-Vogelsang in the 1920s, which preferred to produce grave monuments, namely "Georg Schaefer & Gerhard Ebeler". His career as a folk songwriter began as early as 1910, namely with Rollschohn the Essersch is now running (Mrs. Esser is now roller skating). He wrote humorous scenes in which the two Cologne city originals Tünnes and Schäl reacted to everyday phenomena as well as world events, wrote carnival hits, mostly in collaboration with the composer Hans Otten , and numerous carnival revues for the Cologne folk singer Grete Fluss . As early as the 1910s, before the First World War, he was discussing gramophone records with 'humorous lectures' in the Cologne dialect. In the 1920s and 1930s he was always a welcome guest in the recording studios with his lectures and his dialect songs.

World hit

Odeon vocal guitarists - you can't be faithful

Among his lyrics you can not be faithful from the film of the same name by Franz Seitz , which was released in German cinemas on February 11, 1936, later a world hit in the setting by Hans Otten. The song was released on record in December 1935 and triggered a wave of cover versions years later . The English-language version You Can't Be True, Dear came in seven versions on the market, of which the version by Ken Griffin was released in April 1948 and remained at the top of the US hit parade for seven weeks . The English text was written by Hal Cotton, the film actor Jerry Wayne sang over the original instrumental version of Griffin. Both versions, both the original instrumental version and the vocal version, were in the hit parade at the same time, and both together have been sold over three million times. It was the first million seller for a German composition, albeit not in Germany.

(Why is it so beautiful on the Rhine; 1929) or En d'r Höhnergass 204 (in Hühnergasse No. 204; 1930).
