Gerhard Horsmann

Gerhard Horsmann (born April 2, 1958 in Mainz ) is a German ancient historian .

Gerhard Horsmann studied from 1978 to 1983 at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, initially history and sports, later ancient history. In 1982 he became a certified sports teacher and passed his state examination the following year . In 1984 he became a research assistant in Mainz and received his doctorate in 1988 with a thesis on the subject of investigations into military training in republican and imperial Rome . The habilitation took place in 1997 with the work The Charioteers of the Roman Empire. Investigations into their social position , also in Mainz. After his habilitation, Horsmann became a university lecturer in Mainz, and in 2003 a scientific employee. In 2002/2003 he taught as a deputy professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn . Since July 2009 he has been an adjunct professor of ancient history at the University of Mainz.

Horsmann's main research interests are the history of ancient sport and its actors, such as Greek agonistics and Roman ludi , as well as ancient slavery, Roman private law, and numismatics and monetary history.
