Gerhard Just (born June 14, 1877 in Karlsruhe , † after September 1944) was a German chemist ( physical chemistry ).

biography

Just was the son of the professor of botany at the TH Karlsruhe Leopold Just and Katharina, called Käthe (1847-1933), daughter of August Grahl . He studied physics and chemistry at the TH Karlsruhe, in Freiburg and Leipzig and received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1901 (solubility of gases in organic solvents), whereby he examined the solubility of gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide in a wide variety of organic solvents (alcohols , Esters, benzene and other aromatic compounds). In 1902 he was with Jacobus Henricus van 't Hoff in Berlin and in 1903 assistant to Max Julius Le Blanc in Karlsruhe. When Fritz Haber came to Karlsruhe in 1906, he took on him as an assistant and Just completed his habilitation in 1908 (physical-chemical studies on iron salts). He followed Fritz Haber to the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute in Berlin in 1911, becoming department head, professor and deputy director.

He was involved in Fritz Haber's ordnance research during World War I and lost an arm in a laboratory accident (to which Otto Sackur fell victim). For this he received the Baden War Merit Cross.

From 1918 to 1926 Just was an honorary "Scientific Member of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society" at the KWI for Physical Chemistry and Electrochemistry for his services in the First World War, from 1926 to 1936 he was an "External Scientific Member" at the same institute.

He is not to be confused with the chemist Gerhard Just at the TH Merseburg-Leuna (co-author of several books).
