Gerhard Neumann (archaeologist)

Gerhard Neumann (born October 20, 1931 in Liessau ; † December 12, 2000 in Athens ) was a German classical archaeologist .

After finishing school in Lübeck, Gerhard Neumann studied Classical Archeology, Ancient History , Philosophy and Egyptology in Tübingen , Munich and London . In 1960 he received his doctorate from Bernhard Schweitzer in Tübingen and then received a two-year travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . This was followed by five years as a consultant in the Athens department of the German Archaeological Institute , from 1969 a scientific assistant in Tübingen, then in 1972 the habilitation and from 1978 to 1997 a professorship for classical archeology at the University of Tübingen. Since 1968 he was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute; 1982/83 member of the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton . Neumann carried out important research on Greek gestures and signs, especially on classical Greek sculpture and on philhellenism in the 19th century.
