Gerhard Simon

Gerhard Simon (born September 8, 1937 ) is a German Slavist and university professor .

Life

Gerhard Simon studied history and Slavic studies at the Universities of Göttingen , Hamburg and at Indiana University .

In 1969 he was in Hamburg with a dissertation on church policy in the Russian Empire Dr. phil. PhD . From 1968 he worked as a research assistant at the Federal Institute for Eastern and International Studies in Cologne. From 1991 to 2000 he was head of the research area Russia and other CIS countries . Most recently he was Senior Scientific Director at the Federal Institute; shortly after its dissolution at the end of 2000, he retired in 2001.

In 1985 he completed his habilitation at the University of Cologne for modern and Eastern European history with a thesis on nationalism and nationality politics in the Soviet Union and has taught here as an adjunct professor since 1991 .

Guest professorships have taken him to the University of Munich , the Humboldt University of Berlin and the University of Mainz . He is a Fellow of the Russian Research Center at Harvard University and a fellowship at the Kennan Institute at the Wilson Center .

During the crisis in Ukraine in 2014 , he was frequently asked as an expert in the media.
