Gerhard Thümmel

Kurt Gerhard Thümmel (born December 15, 1895 in Seehausen ; † June 7, 1971 in Münster ) was Consistorial President of the Evangelical Church in Westphalia.

Life

Origin and family

Gerhard Thümmel was born as the son of the medical councilor Carl Thümmel and his wife Emilia Wilhelmine Bruheim. On May 13, 1927, he married Helene Steinfeld (1898-1993). The marriage resulted in three children.

Career and work

After eight years of attending the Quedlinburg grammar school, Gerhard Thümmel passed the emergency maturity test on August 14, 1914, only to report a few days later as a volunteer. He took part in the First World War and was deployed as a lieutenant in the reserve from 1916. February 5, 1919 to July 1, 1921, he studied in Halle jurisprudence , made on July 23, 1921 his first state examination and received his doctorate on 5 December 1923, Dr. iuris utriusque with the dissertation Die Jagdgenossenschaft der Prussischen Jagdordnung (Hunting Association of the Prussian Hunting Regulations) of July 15, 1907. After the 2nd state legal examination on December 13, 1924, he became an assessor and took over the administration of the position as consistorial assessor at the Evangelical Consistory in Berlin . On July 1, 1934 , he was appointed senior church councilor at the church chancellery of the German Evangelical Church , and on March 1, 1936, he was entrusted with the management of the affairs of the consistorial president in Münster. On May 1, 1938, the appointment as Consistorial President became effective. In World War II Thümmel was last used as a captain of the militia.

Returned to church service, he became a full-time member of the church leadership and legal vice-president of the Bielefeld regional church office on January 1, 1949. He remained in this position until his retirement on January 15, 1965.
