Act

Gerhard Tulodziecki developed - after various work on media didactics - from 1985 onwards the concept of action and development-oriented media education for schools. In doing so, he significantly influenced the development of the orientation framework for media education in the school of the Federal and State Commission of 1995. Its target definition for the promotion of media competence and its differentiation of media education or media education according to five areas of responsibility were incorporated into the concepts for media education and media education of several federal states. Tulodziecki understands media competence as a target for media education or media education - initially on a general level - as the “ability and willingness to act appropriately, self-determined, creatively and socially responsible in a world shaped by the media”. He combines this general understanding with five areas of responsibility:

  • Selecting and using media offers (taking alternative courses of action into account)
  • Own design and distribution of media contributions
  • Understanding and evaluating media messages and media design
  • Recognizing and processing media influences
  • Looking through and assessing conditions of media production and distribution (including influencing).

In addition, Tulodziecki has been working out the concept of action and development-oriented didactics since 1987. In his action model, learning - based on the life situation and the needs of children and adolescents - is understood as an expansion of the level of experience and knowledge while at the same time further developing the intellectual and socio-moral level of judgment. Accordingly, lessons should be planned and implemented as a discussion of problems, decision-making, design and assessment tasks that are significant for children and young people. Correspondingly, Tulodziecki designed and implemented the practice and theory-based development and empirical evaluation of concepts for pedagogical action as a specific research method for didactics and media pedagogy and placed it in the context of design-oriented educational research.

Tulodziecki is an honorary member of the Society for Media Education and Communication Culture and an active member of the school department there and of the "Media Education" section of the German Society for Educational Science and supports the professional debate on "standards in media education".
