Gerhard Ziegler (diplomat)

Gerhard Ziegler (* 1948 ) is a former Austrian civil servant and diplomat.

Life

From 1988 Ziegler was press spokesman for the Austrian Foreign Minister Alois Mock . For three years he was deputy head of mission at the Austrian embassy in Thailand. From February 1993 to November 1996 he headed the press department of the Austrian Foreign Ministry. At the end of 1996 he was appointed Austrian ambassador to China . In November 1998 he was dismissed because the allegations against him of bad behavior in public, excessive expenses, lack of organizational skills and contact with prostitutes were denied by him, but the majority of investigations by the Foreign Ministry found them to be correct. It was later revealed that there was also allegation of attempted antiquity smuggling. After almost a year of sick leave, Ziegler returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in October 1999 and at the end of 2000 he became a representative of the Austrian Ministry of the Interior to the EU at the permanent representation of Austria in Brussels . In 2007 he was the Austrian ambassador to Zimbabwe .
