German Goldenshteyn

German Goldenshteyn (born September 2, 1934 in Otaci , Romania (now Moldova ), † June 10, 2006 on Long Island , New York City ) was a Soviet clarinetist .

Goldenshteyn comes from the shtetl Otaci in today's Moldova . As a Holocaust orphan, he learned the clarinet from the Red Army after the Second World War and played in military bands. Goldenshteyn later played with his band at weddings and collected Jewish songs that were almost unknown to most Eastern Europeans. In 1994 he left for the USA. He performed as a clarinetist and conducted music courses. His last CD, "A Living Tradition", was recorded at the 21st KlezKamp with well-known young Klezmorin. A short time later Goldenshteyn died of a heart attack at the age of 71 while fishing on Long Island .
