The German UPA e. V. is the largest agency for specialists in the field of user experience (UX) and software ergonomics (usability) in the German-speaking area. The persons represented are particularly active in the areas of user specifications , interaction design , software ergonomics, information architecture , user interface design and usability tests . With over 1,500 members (own information, as of June 2014), the registered association is the German-speaking professional association with the largest number of members in the field of UX / software ergonomics (and, according to its own information, also the largest number of members in Europe).

The main task of the association, which currently has seven working groups, is to create internationally recognized standards in this comparatively young professional field. Another focus is the creation of awareness among industrial, trading and service companies that offer users added value "usability-optimized products".

history

The German UPA was founded in Stuttgart in 2002, originally as the "German Chapter of the Usability Professionals Association (UPA)", ie national representation of the international UPA (today UXPA). The association is now completely independent. An application to change the name to "German UXPA" (based on the international model) was narrowly rejected in the 2012 general meeting.

activities

Since 2007, the association has published the "Industry Report" annually, which gives an insight into and overview of the German UX / usability industry.

The German UPA coordinates and supports the German-language activities for World Usability Day (annually on the 2nd Thursday in November). In the area of promoting young talent, the German UPA annually organizes a free “Summer School” in which UX / usability basics are taught to students.

Since 2003, the German UPA has been organizing the Human and Computer conference series together with the Human-Computer Interaction Department of the Gesellschaft für Informatik .
