Germnews

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

From the early days of the Internet in Germany from 1994 to 2008, Germnews was a free daily newsletter that contained a German and an English version of news about Germany on around four to six A4 pages as an email .

The news was primarily based on transcribed German radio news , which were then also translated into English . The service was offered on a voluntary basis by employees of the Gesellschaft für Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung mbH, which was later transformed into the GMD Research Center for Information Technology .

Technically, it was a LISTSERV list that was sent via the GMD's IBM computer to the address GERMNEWS@vm.gmd.de. The service was organized by Rainer Mallon.

The service was discontinued in 2008 after almost 15 years because of the now very extensive range of very current and detailed news from commercial providers on the Internet and because of personnel bottlenecks and work overload of the volunteer employees who had compiled or translated the news free of charge in their spare time.

Most recently, the news was also available on the website www.germnews.de, which also provided archive access.

The site no longer exists, the research facility has been merged with the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft .
