Geron gibbosus is a fly from the family of Wollschweber (Bombyliidae).

features

The flies reach a body length of 8 to 10 millimeters and have a somewhat hump-shaped body. It is colored velvet black and has silver-gray hair and scales. The wings are transparent. The straight forward proboscis is longer than the head and thorax combined. The compound eyes are relatively large in the male and meet in the middle. The long, slender legs have scales on the thighs and rails.

Occurrence and way of life

The species is widespread in southern Europe and North Africa. You can find the adults visiting flowers in summer. The larvae live parasitically on caterpillars of small butterfly species such as sack-carriers .
