In E. Gemar-Koeltzsch's lexicon of Dutch still life painters, it says about Gerrit Willemsz Horst, who was one of Rembrandt's first pupils: “In the still lifes of Gerrit Willemsz. Horst, which can probably be assigned to the late period, the painter orients himself stylistically on Willem Kalf . Tables with white napkins, on which fruits, ham, lobster, dishes, cups and glasses are distributed, stand in front of dark grounds. Horst's pictures can be characterized as representative graphs, which sometimes convey a certain indecision in terms of the number of objects and the composition of the representation. GW Horst is looking for a creative middle ground in which the orthogonals and diagonals, the fullness and emptiness of the picture equally, are taken into account. "

Horst's conspicuous way of painting curtains as if they were poured and the tendency towards green-brown has also led to paintings around 1900 that were sometimes incorrectly attributed to Bol or Rembrandt to be attributed to the rather unknown Horst, for example a picture in the Irish National Gallery happened.

In the 1921 General Artist Lexicon by Hans Wolfgang Singer, however, it is said that Gerrit Willems Horst was a student of Anthony Hendrick and became known through two pictures: The Blessing of Jacob and The Grandmother Skipio . It is correct that he learned from Hendricks in 1625, but switched to Rembrandt from 1635.

The painting Still Life with Fruit with Gold Cup was exhibited in 1880 at the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin. The painting later came to the Berlin museums from the Adolph Thiem collection and probably burned in 1945.
