Gerrit van Dijk (mathematician)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gerrit van Dijk (born August 14, 1939 in Kampen (Netherlands) ) is a Dutch mathematician. He was a professor at Leiden University .

Van Dijk received his PhD in 1969 from the University of Utrecht under Tonny Springer (Spherical functions on the p-adic Group PGL (2)). As a post-doctoral student he was at the Institute for Advanced Study with Harish-Chandra (and in 1970 his transcript from his lecture Harmonic analysis on reductive p-adic groups was published at Lecture Notes in Mathematics). In 1972 he became assistant professor and in 1980 professor at the University of Leiden, where he retired in 2004. From 1988 to 1992 he was dean of the science faculty in Leiden, from 1995 to 1997 director of the Lorentz Center and from 1997 to 2004 director of the Mathematical Institute in Leiden. In 2003/04 he was director of the Leiden Institute for Advanced Computer Science (LIACS).

He was visiting professor in Nancy, Göttingen, Stockholm, Tambov (and organized a cooperation program between the Dutch science organization NWO and Russia) and Fukuoka.

He deals with Lie groups , harmonic analysis, homogeneous spaces and representation theory, theory of Berezin kernels and generalized Gelfand pairs.

Van Dijk was editor of the collected works of Thomas Stieltjes (Springer 1993, 2 volumes). His PhD students include Eric Opdam and Gert Heckman .

He is a member of the Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen and the Bataafsch Genootschap.
