Eric Marcus Opdam (* 1960 ) is a Dutch mathematician who studies algebra and harmonic analysis .

Opdam received his doctorate in 1988 under Gerrit van Dijk at the University of Leiden (Generalized Hypergeometric Functions Associated with Root Systems). He is a professor at the University of Amsterdam . From 2015 he was director of the Korteweg de Vries Institute for Mathematics (KdVI) as the successor to Jan Wiegerinck . He has been at the KdVI since 1999.

He is particularly concerned with analytical aspects of Iwahori-Hecke algebras, with hypergeometric functions that are connected to the root systems of Lie algebras (Heckman-Opdam hypergeometric functions) and Dunkl operators for complex reflection groups.

Opdam was invited to speak at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Barcelona in 2000 (Hecke algebras and harmonic analysis). In 2006 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid . He is a member of the Dutch Academy of Sciences . In 2010 he received an Advanced Grant from the ERC.

He is one of the editors of Compositio Mathematica .
