The Koninklijke Hollandsche Maatschappij der Wetenschappen (KHMW) is a scientific society that was founded in 1752. It is considered to be the oldest learned society of its kind in the Netherlands . In 2002 it was awarded the title “Koninklijk” for its 250th anniversary . The aim of the company is to science to promote. It has been based in the listed Hodshon Huis on Spaarne-Ufer (Spaarne 17) in Haarlem , North Holland, since 1841 . King Willem-Alexander has taken over the patronage . The economist Alexander Rinnooy Kan is its president.

history

The company was founded in 1752 by the mayor of Haarlem, Raet Arent, along with six other townspeople. He also assumed the first presidency. The KHMW began as a gentlemen's club to discuss scientific and art-related topics and was only reserved for the Dutch at first. After the company was initially quartered in the Haarlem town hall, it lived in Grote Houtstraat No. 51 until it finally moved into the Hodshon Huis at Spaarne 17 in 1841 , which was originally built for Catherina Cornelia Hodshon by the architect Abraham van Hart and is now a listed building. In 1777 an economic branch was established under President Martin van Marum , which was spun off again in 1792 and transferred to the Dutch Society for Industry and Commerce. Under the direction of van Marum, who later also headed the Teylers Museum , a zoological collection, which is considered to be the forerunner of Naturalis in Leiden , was built up. The addition "Royal" was given to the company in 2002 on the 250th anniversary. Lectures, exhibitions and honors at competitions are held regularly. The KHMW has had a relationship with the National Think Tank (NTT) since 2007 ; for example, Vice President ME Biermann sits on the NTT's advisory board. The Society has a small library, which includes a first edition of Isaac Newton's Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica from 1687.

Promotion of science

The society earned its reputation through the annual prize questions asked from 1735 to 1917 on scientific topics and practical investigations with scientific means. Over 1200 price questions were asked during the period. From 1870 to 1888, the Huygens and Boerhaave Medals were awarded every two years for significant research in ten sub-areas of science over the past 20 years. It was originally planned to extend this concept of retrospective recognition several times by 20 years. After the first round it was decided to invest ten times a sum of money in answering urgent questions. This concept also ended in 1908. In 2010, this tradition of annual awards was revived in collaboration with NRC Media . Since 2012, the Boerhaave Biography Prijs has been awarded for the biographies or scientific correspondence analyzes of people related to the Netherlands. Nowadays the KHMW awards a large number of science prizes and grants.

organization structure

The company is a non-profit organization that is financed in particular through donations. Participation can be divided into directors and domestic and foreign members. While the former are more responsible for financial support, the latter developed scientific activities. This dichotomy runs through the entire history of the KHMW. There were 350 directors and 350 members in 2013. The connection to the House of Orange has a long tradition. King Willem-Alexander now has the patronage of the society, of which Alexander Rinnooy Kan is president.
